The APSA Migration and Citizenship Section brings together political scientists working on issues of migration and citizenship, promote teaching and research in the field, and encourage communication among political scientists and scholars of migration and citizenship in related disciplines, including policy and other professionals, domestically and internationally.Section’s best book, best article, best chapter, and best dissertation awards, which were presented at the APSA meeting 2014 in Washington D.C.Please note that we slightly changed the layout and the structure of the newsletter. You find now the references and notes of all contributions at the end of this issue.APSA Dissertation Workshops APSA sponsors dissertation workshops on the Wednesday prior to the APSA Annual Meeting. Each full-day workshop includes six PhD candidates who present a dissertation chapter, along with two faculty members who lead the workshop and moderate discussions.

Organized sections provide an opportunity for groups of APSA members who share a common interest in a particular subfield to organize meetings and coordinate communications under Association auspices. Sections provide the membership with outlets for research and opportunities for scholarship. Sections help encourage the study of political science.DISSERTATION AWARD Previous recipients can be viewed here. SUBMISSION GUIDELINES: The Race, Politics, and Ethnicity Section of the American Political Science Association is accepting nominations for Best Dissertation completed in the period January 2019 to December 2019. Selection Criteria and EligibilityThe ASA Dissertation Award honors the best PhD dissertation from among those submitted by advisers and mentors in the discipline. Dissertations from PhD recipients with degrees awarded in the current year will be eligible for consideration for the following year’s award. Dr Tsourapas has been elected Treasurer of the American Political Science Association’s Section on Migration and Citizenship (2017-19), and Treasurer of the International Studies Association Ethnicity, Nationalism, and Migration Studies Section (2017-19).

The Political Science Department would like to congratulate our own Professor Adrian Shin. Shin's dissertation received the 2017 APSA Best Dissertation Award in the Migration and Citizenship Section. His dissertation was viewed by a committee member as “an ambitious, big picture project.

The chapter received the award based on its valuable contribution to the migration and citizenship literature. A paper published in the Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies in 2016 by Floris and Maarten, co-authored with Hans Schmeets, recently also received an honourable mention for the Best Article Award, by a different committee of the APSA migration and citizenship section.

Prof. Noora Lori wins APSA dissertation award. August 31st, 2014 in MENA program news. Dr. Noora Lori, who joined the Frederick S. Pardee School of Global Studies at Boston Univeristy as an Assistant Professor this Fall, has been awarded the Best Dissertation award of the Migration and Citizenship section of the American Political Science Associaton (APSA).

Adrian Shin's dissertation “Primary Resources, Secondary Labor: Natural Resources and Immigration Policy around the World” won the APSA Award for the Best Dissertation in Migration and Citizenship. Committee members include: Bill Clark (Co-Chair), Rob Franzese Jr. (Co-Chair), Jim Morrow, Iain Osgood, and Alan Deardorff (Economics).

Volha Charnysh PhD graduate won the Best Dissertation.

Dr. Daisy Kim (PhD in Political Science, 2015) received the Best Dissertation Award from the American Political Science Association (APSA) Migration and Citizenship Section for her dissertation, “Bargaining Citizenship: Women’s Organizations, the State, and Marriage Migrants in South Korea.”.

His work has been recognized with best paper awards from the International Studies Association Ethnicity, Nationality, and Migration (ENMISA) section, the Migration and Citizenship section of the American Political Science Association (APSA), and his dissertation won the 2011 Peace and Justice Studies Association Best Graduate Dissertation of the Year award, among other recognitions.

In short, life in the Section on Migration and Citizenship promises to be interesting for the foreseeable future. Your officers are doing their best to help the Section move forward. We will be navigating new presentation formats this next meeting, but we intend to maintain the traditions that we have established—awards to.
